CAREER GROWTH STORY: Laura

Meet Laura

Laura came to The Home Depot with more than a decade of customer service experience across several industries, but home improvement wasn’t on that list. She was looking for something different and eager to take on a challenge. “I applied to Home Depot to try something new,” Laura shares. “I’ve worked in the food service industry, home health care, and even in a department store. But never home improvement.” Laura started as a Measure Technician in 2022.

What Do Measure Technicians Do at The Home Depot?

Our Measure Technicians:

  • Travel to customers’ homes to complete in-home measurements
  • Provide excellent customer service by answering questions, sharing product samples, and guiding customers through project decisions
  • Build custom quotes and coordinate installations to support a successful project completion

What Does a Day in the Life of a Measure Technician Look Like?

As a Measure Technician, Laura helps customers bring their home improvement projects to life. She typically completes six in-home appointments each day and drives around 700 miles per week to visit customers throughout her territory. Her mornings start with planning her route and contacting customers to confirm appointments.

At each home visit, Laura takes detailed measurements, creates floor plans that help customers visualize their projects, and builds customized quotes.

My goal is to help guide the customer from the moment I hit their doorstep to the time I leave.
– Laura

Laura answers questions to help customers feel confident about their projects and provides samples so they can see how different products look in their space. She can also help customers explore additional projects like kitchen and bathroom remodels, window replacements, and more.

What Skills Help Someone Succeed as a Measure Technician?

Strong customer service and communication skills are essential for Measure Technicians. With 11 years of customer service experience and the patience that comes with raising four kids, Laura connects naturally with the customers she meets each day. “I’m a people person,” she jokes. “It comes in handy!”

While building relationships came naturally to Laura, the technical side of the role was originally outside of her comfort zone. “What surprised me most about the Measure Tech job is how little I actually knew about the technology they use,” Laura admits. “But Home Depot’s training helped me learn the tools and software needed to complete the job.”

Why Home Depot?

Laura loves that no two days look the same as a Measure Tech. “My favorite part of my job is that no matter where I go, I always see something new every day,” she says. “The responsibilities are the same, but the work is exciting. For me, this beats being in a store or behind a desk any day!”

The support that she has received from her team and leaders is just as important. As a parent of four, Laura values the flexibility that allows her to balance work and family responsibilities. She says The Home Depot works with her availability, offers opportunities for growth, and recognizes her achievements.

“This job is the best job I have ever had,” Laura shares. “Helping people make their home improvement dreams come true is awesome.”
