CAREER GROWTH STORY: Sandra

Turning Construction Experience Into an Inside Sales Career as a Pro Sales Representative

“I used to work in construction and visited the stores constantly as a subcontractor,” Sandra shares. “So my Home Depot story started years before I was hired.”

Sandra spent 13 years in the trades, moving between jobsites and taking on whatever task a project demanded: electrical, plumbing, painting, cleaning, and more. She knows the pressure of a tight deadline and she knows the cost of a late delivery. She has stood in the shoes of our Pros and understands the demands of the job.

After stepping away from the workforce to raise her children, Sandra found her way back to the industry she knew so well through a part-time opportunity at The Home Depot. Starting at the Service Desk, she has grown her career from our stores to the inside sales team. She brings her skilled trades experience to her role as a Pro Sales Representative by supporting a portfolio of our Pro customers.

What does a Pro Sales Representative at The Home Depot do?

Pro Sales Representatives (PSR) are the dedicated partners who help our business-to-business (B2B) Pro customers keep their jobs on track. Our Pro Sales Representatives are responsible for:

    • Driving sales through proactive customer engagement and outreach
    • Managing and growing a portfolio of Pro Customer accounts
    • Coordinating quotes, orders, and deliveries to support customer projects
    • Providing ongoing account support to help Pros run and grow their businesses

For Sandra, the goal is simple: keep the job moving. “In construction, time is money,” she explains. “Our Pros need the materials for their job to be at the jobsite yesterday, not tomorrow.” Her subcontractor background means she understands what’s at stake with every order. If an inventory or delivery issue comes up, she steps in right away, picking up the phone to call the customer with a solution in hand.

While Sandra supports her customers primarily through phone calls and emails, she stays closely connected to their work. “PSRs work virtually so that we can support a large volume of customers,” Sandra explains. “But I make it a priority to connect with my Pro customers in person during my scheduled store days.”

How Do Pro Sales Representatives Build Relationships with Customers?

“I earn trust by being honest with my Pros from day one,” Sandra shares. “If there is a supply delay or a price change, they hear about it from me, and I help find the solution.”

She’s also able to leverage her trades experience to build strong relationships.

I’m more than just a sales rep. I’m a partner. I’m someone who understands their trade and has their back every single day.

All of this is what makes Sandra a trusted partner for the Pros she supports. “When contractors know you’ll be honest and put their best interests first, they will trust you with their entire business,” she says.

What Skills Help You Succeed in a Pro Sales Role?

Sandra’s construction background gives her instant credibility with her Pro customers. She speaks their language, understands jobsite dynamics, and knows how a project moves from planning to completion. While construction experience helps her understand her customers’ needs, the product knowledge she built working in our aisles is just as valuable.

Sandra sharpened her product knowledge by working at the Pro Desk and in our Tool Rental and Specialty departments. “As I grew my career, I intentionally challenged myself to learn departments across the entire store,” she explains. “That way, I would have the knowledge to answer any question that came my way.”

Why Does Sandra Love Being a Pro Sales Representative?

Sandra loves the opportunity to support Pro customers and feels that their wins are our wins, too. “There is no better feeling than being there from the beginning of a project to the very end,” Sandra says proudly. “Knowing that my work helped them finish the job…that’s why I love coming to work every day.”

Supporting her customers is rewarding, but her personal motivation is even more important to her. “What truly drives me every single day is my children and my family,” she shares. “I want them to see that no matter where you start, you can grow and achieve incredible things. I am excited to continue growing and building my future with The Home Depot.”
